What is a djalabiya and what are its origins

Despite its origins many centuries ago, the djalabiya withstood the test of time and remains a popular choice for faithful Muslim men. That said, like other traditional clothes, the djalabiya experienced many changes over time and varies from one city to another making its style very diverse.

What is a djalabiya?

The djalabiya, also known as djellaba, jalabiya or jellabiya, is a kind of long, expansive robe generally worn with a hood and traditionally worn by men of the Muslim faith, especially in the Maghreb.

In Morocco, the djalabiya is a venerated robe, which never went out of fashion. Although it was originally a classic and simple outfit, nowadays, it is decorated and embellished with sfifas, which are trimmings and embroideries that have been added to the design.

The origins of the djalabiya

Like the caftan, the djalabiya of Morocco is a traditional robe born out of the different cultures of the Maghreb and the wider Ottoman Empire. Despite its resistance to the colonization of the Ottoman Empire, Morocco and its dress code were nevertheless influenced by other cultures. Its name "djalabiya" is derived from the Arabic "djilbab".

Originally, the djalabiya was worn only by the men of high standing. Historically the djalabiya, though coveted by all, was not available to common men because of its elegant design.
